Fountain of Life by BeachBum190 Fountain of Life by BeachBum190
A drop of water within a fountain as a life, can go in a large number of different ways. The trajectory of each drop varying in distance, height, duration. As does each life. From the moment it is pushed out from a pipe to the moment of stillness upon landing, a life meets many others, changing with every influence, sometimes losing a small piece of itself or gaining a bit of others. Sometimes a drop grows, but it always loses energy. However it is part of a continuing cycle, it getting pulled back into the fountain to create a new life from the old.

This image was done for a conceptual process where we were to use the idea of a red string and create a concept based on it literally or metaphorically. I based my idea loosely around the idea of the red string of fate and the cycle of life. While I had my idea of what I wanted it to represent, I also wanted it to be an image that others could apply their own interpretation to.

This picture makes me think of two things:

1st life is fragile. It seems to flow so easily, so smoothly... like we could not control it. As if life escaped us...
-A word on the colors: great contrasts first! By having the red coming out and everything being so white, the focus is immediately drawn to the liquid: blood (I don't think I'm taking any chances by saying it's blood). As if nothing else was important in the picture but so bland in comparison. Yet this white is not frightening: is isn't a blinding white. Yes it's cold as one could feel if blood was coming out out of himself, but it's also peaceful (in that it isn't troubled or blurry). Although the main focus is on the blood, the shading of the hands allows you to see them clearly (I'll come back to this later).

And 2ndly there's the title... It could be called 'suicide'; but it's called "fountain of life". Immediately I think of a blood donor. A passage in the Bible states that "life is in the blood" (genesis 9.4). This picture can reflect sacrifice: giving one's life to save another. I noticed the position of the hands and the blood: it seems all directed towards one source at the bottom. It's not flowing everywhere in anarchy (which would be appropriate if it was a unwanted death) but it is carefully directed in one direction, as if not wanting to lose a single drop.

The position of the hands being so firm while life is flowing out denotes great determination. I don't know if you had this in mind when doing this, but to come back to the idea of sacrifice, it shows determination to go to the end, as if waiting firmly till all 'life' has been passed. I imagine someone wounded, almost dying beneath the picture, recovering slowly from this 'blood donor' exchanging his life against death... (maybe I'm being too lyrical now)...

As I mentionned above while talking about colors and the shading of hands; though the focus is on the blood (on the "life"), the shading lets you see the hands clearly. Maybe the whites and greys are mimicking stone, like a gothic stone foutain of blood, but I prefer a different interpretation:
-Hands are in the background, but they're still so important. If blood is life, the hands, though very shy, are the ones directing it... as if sacrifice (blood) was the ideal represented here, but you need hands for it (someone who has the will to do it, to 'erase himself' beneath the ideal, so that he just becomes a humble vessel through whom something greater will flow...) Oh no, I'm being lyrical again.

Seriously, I have no idea if this was what you had in mind, nor the mood in which you were when preparing it, but anyway this picture encouraged me today. I think it is beautiful, of great composition and meaning, and I'm faving it right now!

Just a quote to finish: "there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends" -Jesus, before dying on the cross. (Gospel of John 15.13)

Have a good day!

I think the basic idea with the "fountain of life" is very clever and the way you have put together the picture really stands out. I think the way you have carried it out really makes this a powerful piece. You have clearly shown a sense of competence and you have carried out the artwork very well. You have done well with the colours and it is VERY original.
There is great attention to detail as you can even see the lighting effects and the wet skin on the hands.
Next time though, maybe try some techniques that stand out from the crowd.

This is outstandingly beautiful... the colours are perfect, and the amount of work it must've been to get this shot just the way it is! A very very well-deserved DD, congratulations!

There's something in this picture that just draws my attention to it. The whole concept is amazingly thought out of, and the use of blood as the fountain of life really gives this a deep meaning. The white hands against white draw an amazing contrast to the redness of the blood, and really brings it out. First you only see that red line, which catches your attention, and you take another look just to see what's going on. The relaxed hand-pose also gives it a very soft look, even though the subject can seen very eerie and dark, too, regardless the overall whiteness. That's another thing I like about this picture; there are a few different meanings I could draw from it, and that speaks of great art. Simply amazing! :)

Wonderfully done. You can tell a lot of thought and creativity went into putting this all together. I love the color of the blood. Against the white hands and background, it would be very easy for it to look fire engine red and corny. But this is deeper, calmer, and somehow much more striking. Congratulations on the DD. Also, I hope you got an A on your project. :)
